EXCLUSIVE 'JAMIE MARKS IS DEAD' CLIP

(screencaps below)
"With writer / director Carter Smith’s supernatural horror/love story Jamie Marks Is Dead having just played the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, we thought it time to chat with the filmmaker regarding the feature, as well as to bring you three exclusive stills and a clip.

Based on the Christopher Barzak novel One for Sorrow, Jamie Marks Is Dead documents the discovery of the body of the titular character (portrayed by Noah Silver) in a small wintry town.  Adam (Cameron Monaghan), the star of his cross-country team, becomes fascinated with Jamie, a boy nobody really knew or interacted with, except occasionally to bully him.  When Jamie’s ghost begins to appear both to Adam and Gracie (Morgan Saylor), the classmate who discovered the body, Adam is caught between two worlds.  He has a budding romance with Gracie, but he also feels a deep connection to Jamie, who brings him closer to the world of the undead.  Madisen Beaty, Judy Greer and Liv Tyler round out the cast. Produced by Smith and Alex Orlovsky, Hunter Gray, Jacob Jaffke and Omri Bezalel, Jamie Marks Is Dead is Smith’s second Sundance selection (following his 2006 short film "Bugcrush," which received the Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking).

Chatting with Smith, he stated of his attraction to the source material, and his approach in translating it into a screenplay and film: “As a reader, I first fell in love with the characters Barzak had created, so I wanted to make sure that Adam and Jamie and Gracie all stayed true to what he’d written.  I also felt like the world he’d written was such a distinct character; the abandoned buildings and the sense that the place was dying.  So that was important to keep as well.”

“Beyond that,” Smith continued, “it was trial and error, really.  I started out with quite a bit more of the book in the script, but gradually peeled things away until the story became totally focused on this triangle between Jamie and Adam and Gracie.  In draft after draft, and then cut after cut, I found that only the scenes and characters that moved the story forward got to stay.”

Smith’s background lies in fashion and celebrity photography, which can be seen regularly in Elle, Allure, and GQ. “As a photographer I make images pretty much all day, every day.  I spend my life creating frames and then collaborating with a team on exactly how to cull them.  With this film, one of the things I was so struck by when I read the novel was how clearly I could see the story as I read it that first time.  I need to be surrounded by images while I’m writing, so I took a lot of pictures as I was working, of landscapes and abandoned places, but also of teenage boys, trying to figure out exactly what ‘my’ Jamie Marks would look like.  All of these pictures went into what became a huge reference file that I could share with my director of photography (Darren Lew), production designer (Amy Williams) and makeup designer (Mike Potter).” (source)

Cameron talks about #JMID and filming with the cast - BTS Sundance 2014

Cameron: "Basically the way we've filmed this movie was in upstate New York in the middle of a January/February.. freezing cold.. we are in a very very very small town there is nothing for miles around so every day with you for 16 hours than we would go back we at all be with each other because there was nothing else to do, we had to be! but it was great we became very close very fast and I think it kinda helped with the the movie as well. I think calling this movie a scary movie might be a bit of a misnomer. It has some elements of horror and it certainly is frightening and unsettling in a way.. it's more reminiscent to say the shining than a slasher but at the same time um, yeah no, it's absolutely..uhm, this movie has lighter elements of comedy and friendship and all that but it's a heavy drama and we also have the horror elements and that's tough to act, you know..."

Jamie Marks Is Dead: Sundance Review + INTERVIEW

JAMIE MARKS IS DEAD REVIEW

PARK CITY – A ghost story for the Bullying Awareness age, Carter Smith's Jamie Marks is Dead offers a teen protagonist who, in death as in life, can only really be seen by a few of his schoolmates. Based on Christopher Barzak's young-adult novel One for Sorrow, the film brings high school angst and the supernatural together in a serious, unglamorous way likely to disappoint fans of the Twilight franchise; more patient viewers may find much to admire.

Cameron Monaghan plays Adam, an athletic redhead who is introverted compared to his loud, nerd-taunting fellow jocks. When one of those nerds, a classmate he barely knew named Jamie Marks (Noah Silver) is found dead and near-naked beside a river, Adam feels an inexplicable kinship with the boy. Visiting the site of Jamie's death he meets Gracie (Morgan Saylor), the loner who found the body. Surprisingly forward, Gracie invites Adam to come over some time and check out her rock collection.

Carter Smith: "tell me guys what made you intrested in the project"
Cameron Monaghan: "well, for me the first thing was obviously the script. I've read the script and there was something about it that kind of went under my skin. There were some emotional elements in the movie that I've never felt before. This mix of... this drama, this team of stories and loneliness and connections, all that.. but at the same time it also had this frightening element and it was just something I've never seen before."

new articles talk about Cameron Monaghan!

During those days, a lot of sites are talking about Cameron and his new upcoming movie "Jamie Marks is Dead" which will be released this sunday at Sundance Film Festival! here you go with few articles that talked about it:

(source)

cameron-monaghanCAMERON MONAGHAN
Movie: ”Jamie Marks Is Dead” (U.S. Dramatic Competition)
Why He’s One to Watch: Everyone knows Monaghan as gay teen Ian Gallagher on Showtime’s “Shameless” but that could change if “Jamie Marks” lives up to its potential. The teenage thriller is Carter Smith’s follow-up to the underrated horror film “The Ruins” and the fashion photographer’s knack for striking imagery is said to be put to good use here. With upcoming turns in two high-profile Weinstein Co. releases between “The Giver” and “Vampire Academy,” Monaghan is an actor on the rise, and “Jamie Marks” can only help his ascent to movie stardom.
First Screening: Sunday, Jan. 19, 8:30 p.m. at the Library

(...) There's also Jamie Marks Is Dead in competition, a coming-of-age ghost story directed by CarterSmith -- he made The Ruins for DreamWorks -- about a teenage track star (Cameron Monaghan) who becomes obsessed with a bullied boy (Noah Silver) after his dead body is discovered in a river.

The Sundance Springboard: 10 Actors to Watch Out For at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival

Cameron Monaghan ("Jamie Marks is Dead")

Why You May Know Him: The 20-year-old is best known for his portrayal of Ian Gallagher in Showtime's "Shameless," with 39 episodes and counting. Before it got off the ground, Monaghan dabbled in shows like "Rizzoli & Isles," "NCIS," and "Fringe." Also pre-"Shamless" was "Corey and Lucas for the Win," in which he played Corey for all six episodes.
What Sundance Could Mean for Him:
After a lot of TV time, "Jamie Marks is Dead" marks a burst of activity in film work for Monaghan (see below -- this is the first of many). After his death, the ghost of high schooler Jamie Marks is as lonely as he was during life, and he visits his classmate Adam McCormick in a search for love and friendship. Monaghan stars as Adam in a refreshingly moving role. Filmmaker Carter Smith in an interview (watch ithere) said that a big hurdle for him was finding actors (references to Monaghan and costar Noah Silver) who "could really understand what wasn't on the page and bring that to life - that was huge."
What's Next?
A lot. Monoghan will star in books-to-movies "The Giver" as Asher, and in "Vampire Academy" as Mason Ashford (his looks and that role? Seamless). Other upcoming features for him include "Mall," "All Hail the Squash Blossom Queen," and future episodes of "Shameless."

The 8 Sundance Movies You Need to Know Now

Jamie Marks Is Dead

Not a horror film, but also not a love story—that's how Carter Smith, the director of Jamie Marks Is Dead,
describes his intriguing movie. The sad but interesting premise revolves around a triangle between
three friends, newcomer Noah Silver, Cameron Monaghan (Shameless), and Morgan Saylor (Homeland).
Jamie Marks, Noah's character, dies and comes back as a ghost to find love in ways he never experienced
when he was alive. Based on the novel One for Sorrow by Christopher Barzak, this one is sure to be tearjerker.
